Email Security is Moving to Microsoft

As a quick reminder, starting April 15, 2025, ITS is officially moving away from Barracuda Email Gateway Defense and fully transitioning to Microsoft’s built-in email security platform.

What does this mean for you?

  • No previously created allow/deny lists will carry over.
    • If you had custom exception policies (like safe senders or blocked addresses) set up in Barracuda, those will not be migrated. Microsoft will start fresh, so you may notice a few emails being flagged or delivered differently at first.
  • Microsoft takes a little time to learn.
    • We know change can be bumpy at the start. Microsoft’s email filtering will get better over time as it learns what’s legitimate and what’s not in our environment. Please be patient while it tunes itself for our inboxes.
  • No more logging into the Barracuda portal.
    • Going forward, exception management (like marking something as not junk or blocking senders) will live directly inside Outlook. We’ll be creating Knowledge Base (KB) articles soon to walk you through how to manage those settings in the new system.
