Helping Ukraine

Regis junior Olivier Sokolowski, whose family is from Poland and had family in Ukraine, was interviewed on Colorado Public Radio’s Colorado Matters today about his efforts — with help from Regis — to collect medical supplies for Ukrainians. Olivier speaks right at the beginning.

As a reminder, medical supplies are being collected for Ukraine in Dayton Memorial Library as well as the St. John Francis Regis Chapel. A list of supplies can be found here.

Regis at South by Southwest

Regis students are working with Anderson Data Science professor Mike Busch on Link to Learn’s augmented reality medical training research project. The project took a huge step forward in December when they discovered a method of automating preparation of three-dimensional human scans for training in a machine learning model. Prior to this methodology, the three-dimensional elements would have to be prepared manually – an onerous task that could take upwards of 20 minutes per 3-D “image,” with hundreds of images per subject scanning session.

The group has pushed the methodology even further this session to create real-time demonstration software that shows live scan video side-by-side with the animated, processed three-dimensional representation. This software shows that they can now do in under a second a process that used to take 20 minutes, and it can be done with no human intervention. Alaa Senjab, a student developer indicates that his demo (shown in image) can process more than 15 frames per second!

Link to Learn is currently showcasing the software demonstration at their South by Southwest conference booth in Austin, Texas, starting March 11, 2022.

Join the Next Good Trouble Conversation

7-8 p.m., Thursday, March 24

St. John Francis Regis Chapel

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. What is Title IX? Title IX is an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The amendment was added in 1972, at the height of the women’s Liberation Movement. It states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Title IX is turning 50 in June and ODEIE is taking this opportunity to learn what progress has been made across intercollegiate athletics over the years and what work continues to be needed. We want the community to understand the significance of Title IX.  Join us as our own Kate Whalen, Associate Athletic Director and Sarah Kellner, Head Coach Women’s Lacrosse, and others lead us in a conversation about the impact of Title IX on athletics and answer questions from the audience. Please plan on continuing the conversation over a reception that will follow in the Narthex.
