A Message from President Aceves
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Regis community, I want to warmly welcome Dr. Erin Winterrowd as our new Dean of Regis College. With a wealth of knowledge and years of experience as faculty in the college, Dr. Winterrowd is a wonderful addition to the leadership team. I asked Erin to reflect and share her vision for the college. He is what she shared.
“The new year often brings celebration, anticipation, and goals for the year to come. This time, the new year had me traveling from the Pomponio Family Science Building to the Office of the Academic Dean in Loyola Hall. During the first two days of the traditional semester, my second week on the job, I stood outside my office during the morning class commute and greeted students and faculty as they streamed through the front door of Loyola. The excitement and nervousness on their faces matched what I was feeling inside. They laughed a little apprehensively when they saw the title on the door behind me and then turned to greet each other with enthusiasm. It was clear that they were proud to be students at Regis. I share that pride with them.
The new building, and the new job, offer me an opportunity to see the college from a larger perspective. We are in a moment when the broader society is desperate for citizens who are knowledgeable in the ways of learning from and caring for others. This is the kind of education Regis College provides. Through a hope-filled and mission-driven education that focuses on “how ought we to live,” Regis College bridges meaning-making, interdisciplinarity, and the slow, deliberate, discernment of a liberal arts education with hands-on research experiences, community internships, and travel-based learning. It is this kind of vocational training, focused on the whole person and in accompaniment with others, that leads alumni to routinely identify “the philosophy class,” “the trip to El Salvador,” or “the time they did brain surgery with a faculty member,” that changed their entire view of their lives, themselves, and their future. My vision for Regis College is to be a university leader and community partner in this faith- and justice-based work, centering Hispanic Servingness in all we do.
Students often come to us with a goal of returning to serve their communities as leaders. This year, I join our students in that goal. I have been a member of the Regis community since 2016. During that time, I have seen times of joy, times of sorrow, and times of transition. Many of you long-standing faculty and staff have seen so much more. As I begin the new year, I am hopeful, determined, and clear-headed, looking through my new window into both Lot 2 and the promising future of the university.”
Thank you Dr. Winterrowd for sharing your vision. As we embark on a new chapter for Regis College, I am filled with a profound sense of hope and joy. Witnessing the vibrant spirit of our students and the dedication of our faculty, I am reminded of the transformative power of a Regis education. Let us together strive to be stewards of 'how ought we to live,' fostering a community deeply rooted in faith, justice, and Servingness, as we navigate the promising future that lies before us.
Kindly,
Salvador D. Aceves, Ed.D
