Learn about the Regis Mentoring Program

Did you know that for more than 20 years the Provost’s Office has offered a mentoring program for interested faculty and staff? It is a great way to build relationships across the university, receive professional support, and help achieve your goals. The program runs every September through May, and you can apply for next year beginning in April.

Here is what two Regis staff members participating in the program this year had to say:

From Nicolene Capra, Accounts Payable Specialist (protégé):

The mentor/protégé program has been an enlightening experience. I came into the program not knowing what to expect, and I am so thankful I was paired with Paula. She has been nothing short of remarkable. I have learned everything from how to become a better manager to learning good training techniques to becoming more comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. One of the many lessons I will take with me is that she taught me to ‘act how I want to feel.’ This has helped me to become more confident, especially in the realm of public speaking.  Her deep spirituality has helped me to see all sides of a situation and build upon my sense of empathy. I’ve also been navigating some difficult situations in my personal life, and she has been a blessing with her support and ability to give me strength to face them. I would encourage anyone who is interested in growing professionally and personally to look into the Mentoring Program, as it has been an invaluable experience.

From Paula Colorosa, Assistant to the Senior VP and CFO  (mentor):

At our first meeting, in addition to other housekeeping items like establishing frequency of meetings, where to meet, etc., we set other expectations to ensure that our pairing had the maximum opportunity to succeed.  Critical to each of us was to begin the relationship with full trust and a commitment to confidentiality.   This set the tone so that our discussions could be honest, allowing me to share my own experience of building strong daily work habits, the challenges that come with managing staff, how to deal with conflict, and to offer advice that might positively guide her in her own career journey.   With each meeting, I am struck by how much I have learned from Nicole and how richly our discussions are infused with Jesuit principles.

Our pairing, in my opinion, has been great.  I just hope and pray that when this initiative concludes, Nicole can say that she learned some things that truly enhanced her personally and professionally.
