Campus Safety Update for Parents and Families - Sept. 7

Parents and Family Members,

We wanted to reach out after the events of last night on campus. If you were not aware, there was a campus lockdown after it was reported that there were three people on campus, one of whom was carrying a gun. For about three hours, students on campus were asked to shelter in place. The Denver Police Department conducted a building-by-building sweep as well as reviewed campus security camera footage. No weapon was found. Groups of students who were in the Field House and Student Center at the time were given escorts to safety. At about 12:40 a.m., the lockdown was lifted by Denver Police.

We want to reassure you that although we cannot always prevent things like this from happening, we do act quickly and have systems in place for ensuring the safety of our students and community. We live in a time when because events like this are tragically common, they can be triggering for young adults because of past personal experiences or news events.  Please know that we have supports in place for students who need them. Communications have been sent to students directing them to various supports. Crisis resources were shared last night and today, along with additional support resources.

The Office of Counseling and Personal Development is offering open drop in hours and extra supports around the clock for as long as necessary. If your student does not feel they need counseling support but would like to talk about last night’s events, you can encourage them to speak with their faculty members, CDA’s, or Peer Ministers. Simply sharing our feelings and reactions with supportive people can be a help.

We understand some students did not receive text alerts and only received email alerts. We are reminding students to make sure they are signed up for text alerts at https://www.regis.edu/life-at-regis/safety-and-security. We appreciate you reinforcing this as well.

If you have concerns or questions about the events of last night, please reach out to me. I am here as a resource to all of our parents and families.

Thank you for entrusting your student to us. In times like these that trust is all the more appreciated.

Gratefully,
